Plugable Updates Classic Docking Station For Three Monitors… Even With Apple’s M1 And M2 MacBooks - Forbes

Plugable makes computer docks and accessories for home and workspaces so hybrid workers can get the most from their IT gear. The company has upgraded one of its top docking stations with streamlined display connections and a significant power boost.

The Plugable UD-ULTCDL docking station can now support three additional displays and comes with five extra USB ports, enabling home and office workers to transform their workspaces with a single gadget.

The original UD-ULTCDL model launched six years ago and came with a variety of display options, including a DVI port and a VGA adapter (remember those?). Still, as we now live in an age where HDMI is the dominant video port standard and the new version of the docking station has three HDMI ports (1x HDMI 1.4 - Alt Mode, 2x HDMI 1.3 - DisplayLink) with support for screens up to 1080p with a 60Hz refresh rate.

The UD-ULTCDL now has a 100W charging capability (96W certified), which is enough to charge almost any laptop, even under a heavy workload. The advanced chipset also communicates with the laptop to find the perfect charge level, avoiding over-charging the computer's battery.

In addition to 100W charging to the host laptop, the new docking station also has a front-facing USB-C port for 5Gbps data transfer and 20W charging for topping up smartphones or tablets. In addition to the front-facing USB-C port, the 13-in-1 docking station also offers four USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, a Gigabit Ethernet port, plus separate audio in and audio out ports for headset use.

Using DisplayLink Technology, the UD-ULTCDL takes the strain by enabling nearly all USB-C laptops to drive three additional displays, even Apple's M1 or M2-powered MacBooks. The docking station is designed to work with Windows 11, Windows 10, and macOS 11+ systems with Thunderbolt 4 / 3, USB4, and USB-C. Apple macOS device users will need to download the DisplayLink Manager application to get full functionality from the docking station, but Windows devices will update the driver automatically via standard Windows updates.

Pricing & Availability: The updated Plugable UD-ULTCDL docking station is now available on Amazon for $249 with a $20 coupon.
