NPD takes proactive approach to holiday safety | Coronavirus - Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel

The Nacogdoches Police Department is taking a more pro-active approach to protecting homes and property this year with the launch of a new home-check program.

Local residents who plan to travel over the holidays can file a request to have patrolling officers check their homes thoroughly for signs of ne'er-do-wells or crimes while they're away by filling out an submitting a form to the department for the time frame the home will be unoccupied.

"This is something completely new we've been working on the logistics for for several months," said Nacogdoches Police Department spokesman Sgt. Brett Ayres.

The forms can be downloaded from the police department's website at nactx.us/760/Police, or can be picked up at and returned to the department's front desk. Residents who submit one of the forms must also provide some sort of verification that they live at the home, Ayres said.

The forms compile information relevant to the patrolling officers, such as when the residents will be gone, what vehicles will be there, whether lights will be on, if pets will be at the home and if neighbors will be keeping an eye on the property.

Ayres said the checks won't just be a cursory glance as an office rolls past, but will involve them getting out of the vehicle and checking around the buildings thoroughly. They won't just be looking for crimes, but for any issues out of the norm that could affect the property.

"We wanted, as a police department, to let people know this police department is going to take care of them," Ayres said.

Law enforcement agencies often fulfill so-called extra-patrol requests for a variety of reasons, including at the request of homeowners or residents who are out of town or suspect they may be targets of suspicious or criminal activity.

The additional patrols scheduled through the department's Vacation House Check program will be entered into the daily activity logs as regular service calls.

The department notes that the extra patrols, while intended to be an extra layer of protection and peace of mind for residents, don't mean its impossible for the home to be burglarized or suffer damage.

"The program is designed so that our residents will have the peace of mind knowing their police department will be checking on their homes, day and night, while they are away," Ayres said.
