PORTLAND, Ore. — One person was shot and killed late Saturday in Portland, Oregon, as a large caravan of President Donald Trump supporters and Black Lives Matter clashed in the streets, police said.

It wasn't clear if the shooting was linked to fights that broke out as a caravan of about 600 vehicles was confronted by protesters in the city's downtown. An Associated Press freelancer observed police medics working on the body of the victim, who appeared to be a white man.

"Portland Police officers heard sounds of gunfire from the area of Southeast 3rd Avenue and Southwest Alder Street. They responded and located a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Medical responded and determined that the victim was deceased," the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.

Portland has been the site of nightly protests for more than three months since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Hundreds have been arrested by local and federal law enforcement and, before the shooting, police made several arrests Saturday and advised residents to avoid the downtown.

The chaotic scene came two days after Trump invoked Portland as a liberal city overrun with violence in a speech at the Republican National Convention as part of his "law and order" re-election campaign theme. The caravan marked the third Saturday in a row that Trump supporters have rallied in the city.

The caravan of Trump supporters had gathered earlier in the day at a nearby mall and drove as a group to the heart of Portland. As they arrived in the city, protesters attempted to stop them by standing in the street and blocking bridges.

Videos from the scene showed sporadic fighting, as well as Trump supporters firing paintball pellets at opponents and using bear spray as counter-protesters threw things at the Trump caravan.

"There have been some instances of violence between demonstrators and counterdemonstrators," Portland Police said via Twitter. "Officers have intervened and in some cases made arrests."

The Black Lives Matter demonstrations usually target police buildings and federal buildings. Some protesters have called for reductions in police budgets while the city's mayor and some in the Black community have decried the violence, saying it's counterproductive.

Early Saturday, fires set outside a police union building that is a frequent site for protests prompted police to declare a riot.

An accelerant was used to ignite a mattress and other debris that was laid against the door of the Portland Police Association building, police said in a statement. At least one dumpster had also been set on fire in the street nearby.

The commotion followed a sit-in in the lobby of the Portland mayor's condominium building Friday night.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump traveled toTexas and Louisiana on Saturday to tourdamage caused by Hurricane Laura, a massive storm that leveled homes and businesses as it slammed ashore this week with 150-mph winds.

Trump visited Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Orange, Texas, meeting with first responders and local officials who are beginning to recover from the Category 4 storm, which made landfall Thursday.

The president, wearing a red hat that read "USA" on the front and "Trump" on back, arrived in Louisiana shortly after 1 p.m.ET. Reporters traveling with him could see blue tarps on houses and debris as Air Force One landed at Chennault International Airport.

Trump toured a warehouse used for relief supplies and then traveled to a neighborhood near downtown Lake Charles, where he was joined by Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, FEMA director Pete Gaynor and Chad Wolf, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

"This was a tremendously powerful storm," Trump said in Lake Charles. "We have to take care of Louisiana. We have to take care of Texas."

"We'll supply what we have to supply and you know what a lot of that is, a thing called green," Trump said. "We'll take care of you."

Trump took Marine One to Orange, later in the day.

Asked if he would travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where thousands protested Saturday in response to the police killing of Jacob Blake last weekend, Trump said "probably so" but offered no details about his plans. Later Saturday White House spokesman Judd Deere told reporters Trump will visit Kenosha on Tuesday to meet with law enforcement and survey damage from recent demonstrations.

Trump declined to discuss Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old charged with intentional homicide and reckless homicide in the fatal shootings of two people during protests Tuesday.

Trump signed a disaster declaration for Louisiana on Friday.

"Now it turned out we got a little bit lucky. It was very big. It was very powerful but it passed quickly," Trump said Thursday during a visit to the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Louisiana Department of Health estimated that more than 220,000 people are without water. Restoration of those services could take weeks or months, and full rebuilding could take years.

Forty nursing homes were relying on generators, and assessments were underway to determine if more than 860 residents in 11 facilities that had been evacuated could return.

An early analysis by Accuweather predicts the total damage and economic loss caused by Laura to be $25 to $30 billion. Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler with Enki Research, estimated it to be $20 billion to $25 billion.

The remnants of Hurricane Laura continued to weaken Saturday as it moved toward the mid-Atlantic states, but it still carried a threat of tornadoes and heavy rain along the coast before exiting into the Atlantic Ocean.

'World's oldest married couple' have lived a combined 215 years and are still in good health - USA TODAY

Their families disapproved of the marriage nearly 80 years ago, but today they are recognized around the world as a record-breaking couple.

Julio Cesar Mora Tapia, 110, and Waldramina Maclovia Quinteros Reyes, 104, have lived a combined 215 years — making them the world's oldest married couple, Guinness World Records reported Tuesday.

There are longer marriages, but the record certifies the couple, who live in Ecuador's capital Quito, as having the "highest combined age of a married couple," Guinness World Records reports.

As of Saturday, the couple have lived a combined 78,654 days. The retired teachers have been married 79 years, 6 months and 22 days.

They're both in good health, although disappointed the pandemic is keeping them from a larger celebration with their 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Among their proudest achievements: Parenting five children who all received college degrees.

"The love and maturity that we had as a couple from the beginning of the marriage allowed us to know each other and grow emotionally to define our future," a Guinness World Records release quotes the couple, who knew each other for seven years before marrying on Feb. 7, 1941.

"It was not easy because our relatives did not have a good relationship, but with time and patience we were able to unite them and we became an example and the best reference for the younger generations."

They say their "secret formula" is "love + maturity + mutual respect."

Previously listed as the oldest were an Austin, Texas, couple, Charlotte Henderson and John Henderson.

Luka Doncic mania takes hold worldwide from USA to Slovenia to Spain - USA TODAY

Posted: 29 Aug 2020 07:30 PM PDT

In a special edition of Weekly Pulse, Mackenzie Salmon is joined by USA TODAY Sports reporters Mark Medina, Jeff Zillgitt, Nancy Armour and Jarrett Bell for a roundtable discussion on the meteoric changes that could take place in America as a result of a historic week in sports. USA TODAY

It doesn't matter when the Dallas Mavericks are playing. It could be prime time in Slovenia and Spain, or it could be the early morning hours, before the sun peaks out. It doesn't matter; hardcore basketball fans and casual fans are tuning into to watch Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic.

"Everybody is buzzing right now," Slovenian broadcaster and editor Luka Stucin of TV Arena Sport told USA TODAY Sports. "The time couldn't be worse — 3 a.m. Slovenia time. But you don't sleep. You watch Luka."

It was a week ago when Doncic put together one of the most memorable individual playoff performances in NBA history with 43 points, 17 rebounds and 13 assists — plus the winning 3-pointer in overtime at the buzzer, giving Dallas a 135-133 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 4.

He is just one of three players to have at least 40 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a playoff game, joining Oscar Robertson and Charles Barkley. And he did it with a sore ankle. Michael Jordan had the flu game. In Slovenia, they're calling it the Ankle Game.

Slovenian prime minster Janez Jansa retweeted the game-winning shot, and NBA Spain's tweet of the buzzer-beater generated nearly two million video views.

Spanish broadcaster Antoni Daimiel had the call for Movistar Plus TV in Spain, and it was spectacular — the call in addition to the shot.

Though he is Slovenian, Doncic has the support of Spanish fans because he played for Real Madrid before joining the NBA.

"He is a special player," Daimiel said. "We know him from when he was 16, playing like a professional. He is the owner of the full pack of basketball talents — IQ, bravery, daring."

Game 6 is Sunday (3:30 ET, ESPN), and Doncic and the Mavericks need a victory to force a decisive Game 7.

UNION LEADERSHIP: Players "always unified" during protest discussions

MOVING FORWARD: Paul vows players voices will continue to be heard

'WE'RE JUST SCARED': Players share their past experiences with police

Doncic is just 21 years old and a star headed toward legend. During the regular season, he averaged 28.8 points (sixth), 9.4 rebounds (24th) and 8.8 assists (third) and led the league with 17 triple-doubles. He also helped the Mavericks make the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and is making Dallas a team other talented players want to join.

"The ball is in his hands, and it's his team," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "I told him that. His job is to play the game and make his teammates as good as they can be and give the players around them confidence. He did those things in Game 4."

Doncic made his first All-Star team in 2020 and will make first- or second-team All-NBA and receive MVP votes this season.

"I think he is the league's next transcendent star," Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. "That's my take on it. It's just remarkable what he is doing right now at his age. And one of the most unique players ever to come into this league. So, I believe he is, if not the transcendent star, one of the transcendent stars."

And becoming royalty in Slovenia, where he has a few nicknames: The Don, Luka Magic, Wonder Boy, Boom Shaka Luka.

"We thought in 2017 when our national team won the European championship, that was the peak of Slovenians caring about basketball," Stucin said. "But week after week, day after day, Luka is just proving us wrong. It's a frenzy here. In Slovenia, every media outlet, every person who maybe watched a game basketball or two is watching Luka, writing about it, sharing videos. It's a crazy atmosphere. Arena Sports hasn't seen that much interest in a long, long time."

The impact on the court has translated to interest in Doncic, which has translated to an impact on NBA business.

"It's not a surprise that he was really good coming into the NBA and winning Rookie of the Year," said NBA senior vice president and managing director of NBA Europe and Middle East Ralph Rivera. "But to come into his first playoffs and play as dominantly as he has played against the Clippers with a great defensive team in Kawhi (Leonard) and to be able to do that in prime time here in Europe, which we don't get to often because of the time zones.

"Games happening in the afternoon in the U.S. are prime time here. That confluence of excitement, his first playoffs, a tremendous performance and to have it in prime time just took it off the charts."

In one year, Doncic jersey sales have risen from No. 17 in Europe to No. 3, and NBA League Pass in Europe had a 79% increase this season over last season.

"Our core fans in Europe obviously will be proud of and gravitate toward him, but it goes beyond that in terms of attracting new fans," Rivera said. "Similar to a Tiger Woods in golf, who got non-golfers interested in golf because it was Tigers Woods, Luka as a persona in addition to the greatness of his game will bring more fans to the game in Europe — because people will identify with him, his background, his story, and him being a great player from Europe."
