Australia police find 400kg of drugs in hot sauce bottles - BBC News Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:55 AM PDT ![]() Four men have been arrested after Australian police found 400kg (882lb) of crystal methamphetamine hidden inside imported hot sauce bottles. Authorities searched a consignment of sriracha chilli sauce shipped to Sydney from the US to discover drugs worth roughly A$300 million (£161m; $207m). They subsequently arrested four men aged 30, 34, 36 and 45 - the oldest of whom was detained on Thursday. Police are in touch with US authorities in a bid to find the shipment's origin. Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said the 768 bottles were en route to a "clandestine lab" in Sydney when they were found. He described the four men arrested as "key members" of a crime network, and vowed to track down others with links to the group. The Sydney Morning Herald quoted one officer who said the drugs had been suspended in the sriracha chilli sauce, saying it was a "sophisticated" process which would require chemistry knowledge by senders and receivers. Methamphetamine use seems to have dipped slightly in Australia in recent years, but government statistics suggest dependency and the harm caused by the drug has increased. It is not the first time Australian police have foiled novel attempts to ship the drug into the country. Officers found A$1.2bn worth of methamphetamine hidden inside stereo speakers and shipped to Melbourne in June. You may also be interested in:![]() Media playback is unsupported on your device |
Halloween candy: Most popular Halloween treats in every U.S. state - CBS News Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:42 PM PDT ![]() Halloween is all about treats, but the candy of choice across the U.S. can vary from state to state. Salt water taffy is the favorite sweet in Nebraska, Washington and Wyoming, while Jolly Ranchers rein supreme in Georgia, and Hot Tamales are the top seller in a number of states. That's what CandyStore.com, a bulk distributor of sugar-laden goods, found in analyzing 12 years of its sales data. The best-selling candy nationally? Skittles, made by the Wrigley Co., a division of Mars. It's also the most popular candy in California, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Minnesota and South Carolina, CandyStore.com said. Overall, consumers will spend $2.6 billion buying Halloween candy this year, about the same as in 2018, the National Retail Federation estimates. Economic research firm IHS Markit forecasts the average household will spend $21.30 on candy this year. The nation's second, third and fourth most-purchased candies understandably all involve chocolate — specifically, Reese's Cups, M&Ms and Snickers. Starbursts and candy corn ranked fifth and sixth, with the former favored in Michigan, New Hampshire, South Dakota and Wisconsin and the latter the top seller in Iowa, Idaho, North Dakota, New Mexico and Nevada. Trending NewsHot Tamales ranked seventh, according to Candy.com, which found trick-or-treaters most likely to find the chewy, cinnamon-flavored oblong candy among their Halloween hauls if they live in Arizona, Indiana, New York and Virginia. Rounding out the top 10: Tootsie Pops, Sour Patch Kids and Hershey's Mini Bars. Following is Candy.com's list of the most popular candy in every U.S. state (and the District of Columbia):

Lewis Capaldi becomes 'America's sweetheart' with US number one single - BBC News Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:45 AM PDT
![]() Lewis Capaldi has celebrated his first US number one by painting his face with the Stars and Stripes and declaring himself "America's sweetheart". The Scottish singer's breakout hit Someone You Loved rose all the way to the top of the Hot 100 after six months on the chart on Monday. He's the first Scot to score a solo US number one since Sheena Easton's Morning Train (Nine To Five) in 1981. "I have no clue why this piano ballad has done what it's done," said Capaldi. "I never thought we were writing a big song here. I just wrote a song and, thankfully, people seemed to like it." Capaldi's lovelorn ballad spent seven weeks at number one in the UK over the summer, and has also topped the charts in Canada, Ireland, Malaysia and the Czech Republic. In the US, however, it has been a sleeper hit, taking 24 weeks to reach the summit; where it replaces Lizzo's Truth Hurts. "I feel like America's sweetheart, at least for a moment," Capaldi told Billboard magazine. "I feel like I'm the sweetest heart in all of the US of A." "I feel like I'm a wrestler, and I'm just walking out [to the ring] and there's an American flag, and I'm saying, 'USA! USA!' That's what I feel like, a wrestler." The 23-year-old, who still lives with his parents, added that breaking the US meant, "I'll be able to pay the rent for the next few months!" Other Scottish musicians to top the US single charts include Annie Lennox, Rod Stewart and Calvin Harris - however all of them did so as part of a group, or as a featured artist. |
