Hurricane Dorian largely spared Puerto Rico, but hit the Virgin Islands with heavy rainfall and strong winds. Dorian is expected to hit Florida. USA TODAY

WASHINGTON – Puerto Rico's leading newspaper slammed President Donald Trump in a front-page headline that went after his repeated false claim that the U.S. has given Puerto Rico $92 billion for hurricane recovery.

El Nuevo Día, which traditionally publishes its articles and newspapers in Spanish, printed an English version of its front page on Friday

"Mr. President: Your Numbers Are Fake," the headline reads.

"Although some politicians in Puerto Rico have indeed mismanaged funds and have let their constituents down, Mr. Trump's claims about the amount of money that has actually been assigned to the island are incorrect," read the the front page. .

Hurricane Dorian pushed past Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin and British Islands earlier this week when it was a tropical storm. Parts of Puerto Rico's eastern and southern coasts experienced some heavy flooding as a result of Dorian.

Congress has approved about $42 billion for Puerto Rico recovery after the island was hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. The newspaper reported that Congress, along with the executive branch, has allocated the country a total of $49.4 billion with $20.5 billion paid out so far.

Earlier this week, Trump bashed Puerto Rico in a series of tweets, saying that the island is "one of the most corrupt places on earth." The tweets came as island residents were preparing to face Dorian.

Puerto Rico is still slowly recovering from the hurricanes.

As of mid-July, the Federal Emergency Management Agency had only given the green light on nine projects out of some 10,000 schools, bridges and other damaged sites dotting the island since the hurricanes.

Dorian still expected to strengthen to Category 4 hurricane

Florida remains on high alert Friday as Dorian is expected to become a "major hurricane," the National Hurricane Center said. Forecasts call for Dorian to slam into Florida by the end of Labor Day weekend as a Category 4 hurricane. Forecasters say it's too soon to determine where the greatest impacts will be. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 26 counties in Dorian's possible path. President Donald Trump canceled his planned trip to Poland over the weekend to "ensure that all resources of the federal government are focused on" confronting Dorian as it heads toward the East Coast.

The Democratic party made headlinesThursday when the lineup of candidates taking part in the third debate on Sept. 12 in Houston was announced. Sanders will be one of ten candidates on stage, as he had no issue meeting raised thresholds in polling and fundraising set by Democratic National Committee guidelines. Former Vice President Joe Biden will also be on the debate stage, but his habit of gaffes has been called into question again. How the party will choose its candidate may be in the air as it was reported Thursday night the DNC will reject Iowa's virtual caucus plan, putting the state's first-in-the-nation status into question.

Driving on Labor Day weekend? You might to look at gas prices more closely

With motorists hitting American highways in droves this weekend, Labor Day gas prices might dent some wallets.  A new study by GasBuddy reveals that the average amount of local labor needed to fill up your car is lowest in several states in the Northeast, while some states in the southeast are comparably more expensive. "You tend to see areas that are more rural that have challenged incomes or lower median hourly wages where the true cost of filling up is more hard work than other areas," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at fuel-savings app GasBuddy. If you're looking to avoid the gas pump Friday but still want to enjoy the holiday weekend, these handful of new apps can help
