At least five people were killed and 21 injured in Midland-Odessa, Texas, after a routine traffic stop triggered a deadly shooting rampage that ended when the gunman was slain by officers, police said.

The incident began at 3:13 p.m. CDT when an assailant described by authorities only as a white male in his mid-30s driving a gold-colored car was pulled over by a pair of state troopers on Interstate 20 for a traffic violation, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Before coming to a stop, the man grabbed a rifle and shot multiple times at the pair of troopers through the rear window, wounding one. He then sped off, shooting at other motorists and passers-by. At one point, he changed to a U.S. Postal Service truck.

Besides the initial trooper who was shot, two others were wounded as well, Texas DPS said, The gunman himself was killed after a chase involving officers from both Midland and Odessa, two cities within miles of each other.

The tragedy shattered an otherwise quiet holiday weekend in West Texas and became the latest mass shooting after others this summer in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and Gilroy, California.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement that he would be traveling to the area on Sunday.

"I want to remind all Texans that we will not allow the Lone Star State to be overrun by hatred and violence," said Abbott.

When it came to changing vehicles, video taken by bystanders and broadcast by local TV station CBS7 showed a white U.S. Postal Service van, allegedly hijacked by the suspect at some point in his rampage. It crashed into a series of police cars set up as a roadblock. The van stopped, and officers quickly approach the van with guns drawn.

Besides the trooper, the injured officers included one from Midland and one from Odessa.

Russell Tippin, CEO of Medical Center Hospital, said 13 shooting victims were being cared for at the facility. He declined to give their ages.

"If you hear my voice, you need to hug your families," he said during a press conference in front of the hospital, which remains on lockdown.

Midland Community Hospital said it had six patients from the shootings. Three of them were in critical condition and the other three were listed as stable.

One of the victims of the shooting was a 17-month-old baby girl. She was initially taken to Medical Center Hospital, but then was transported to UMC Health System in Lubbock, about 140 miles away. The hospital confirmed that she was in "satisfactory" condition Saturday night.

As the incident unfolded, chaos led to confusion. At one point, online and police reports from the Midland and Odessa area reported two shooters traveling separately – one in a small Toyota truck and the other in a postal service van. As it turned out, there was only the lone assailant.

CBS7 twice had its news anchors clear the set at Music City Mall, where they were broadcasting from, as police officers came through the mall with guns drawn. Later, the anchors said they had to leave the mall entirely, but they continued broadcasting via wireless microphones.

"For the safety of the public and law enforcement, please stay away from the area and stay in your homes," the Midland Police Department said on Twitter.

President Donald Trump tweeted that he had been briefed on the shootings and promised more comment later.

There have been 280 mass shootings in 2019, as defined as involving four or more people injured or killed, excluding the perpetrator, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks such incidents,

To date, including this shooting, 602 people have died in mass shootings in 2019 and 2,356 have been injured.

Coco Gauff's US Open run comes to an end with loss to defending champion Naomi Osaka - USA TODAY

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. — Some 98,000 Wilson tennis balls have been supplied to the 2019 US Open. Moments after 15-year-old Coco Gauff took her final singles swing at one of them Saturday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, her head dropped, her friend across the net exulted and the most stirring story line at America's Grand Slam came to an end in the third round, which was way earlier than her fast-growing legion of fans wanted.

Playing before nearly 24,000 people in the world's biggest tennis venue, Gauff, of Delray Beach, Florida, showcased her electrifying athleticism and punishing power at times, but it wasn't enough to overcome her friend and South Florida neighbor, No. 1 Naomi Osaka.

The defending US Open champion and Japanese native dispatched Gauff 6-3, 6-0 in front of enthralled crowd that was certainly pro-Gauff but was obviously in awe of Osaka's shot-making ability and pinpoint accuracy.

As much as the capacity crowd tried to encourage Gauff and will her into the match, Osaka, who had 24 winners to Gauff's six, was too dominant, too unrelenting, to overcome. Gauff's night included seven double faults.

Osaka won the Australian Open in January but has struggled for most of 2019, at one point losing her No. 1 ranking to Australian Ashleigh Barty before regaining it in the weeks prior to the US Open. Osaka beat Serena Williams, arguably the best player in women's tennis history, in last year's US Open to win her first Grand Slam singles title.

Gauff, who began her summer with a charge to the fourth round at Wimbledon, was hoping to bookend it at her home Slam, a dream that couldn't surmount Osaka's championship pedigree.

Gauff had already made some history in New York, becoming the youngest woman to reach the US Open third round since Anna Kournikova in 1996.

US OPEN: Anticipation high as Gauff, Osaka meet in Arthur Ashe Stadium

Osaka took control early after holding serving to open the match by breaking Gauff in the second game. After Osaka held again for 3-0, Gauff finally got on the board in the fourth game, closing it out with a 119-mile-per-hour ace.

The players then exchanged four consecutive breaks of serve, allowing Osaka to serve for the match at 5-3. After failing behind 0-30, Osaka won the next four points to take the opening set.

The match then went off the rails for Gauff as the unforced errors increased and her demeanor deflated.

Gauff gifted Osaka a break to open the second set as she struggled to get a first serve in. Osaka then battled back from another deficit on her serve to take a 2-0 lead for the second consecutive set before breaking Gauff once again to go to 3-0.

Osaka moved to 4-0 with an ace that was initially called out by the linesman but was overruled by replay after a challenge. She then closed out the next two games before both players embraced at the net in a rare display of emotion.

Osaka consoled a distraught Gauff by the umpire's chair before both did the post-match interview. Asked by ESPN's Mary Jo Fernandez, what Osaka said to Gauff, the teenager replied, "She told me I did amazing and asked if I would do the on-court interview with her. I said, 'No,' because I knew I would cry, but she encouraged me to do it.

"She's been amazing, and I'm going to learn so much from this," Gauff continued though her tears. "She's been so sweet to me, so thank you for this. Thank you. ... I don't want people to think I'm trying to take this moment away from her because she truly deserves it."

Osaka was similarly emotional during her interview as she tried to congratulate Gauff's parents before interrupting herself to say, "I don't want to cry."

After composing herself, Osaka continued "I remember I used to see you guys training in the same place as us. For me, the fact that both of us made it, and we're both still working as hard as we can, I think it's incredible. I think you guys are amazing. I think Coco, you are amazing."

Next up for Osaka is Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, the No. 12 seed, who advanced to the fourth round via walkover after Anett Kontaveit of Estonia withdrew from the tournament.
