Opinion | HBO's 'Somebody Somewhere' and the Rise of the Female TV Antihero - The New York Times

Image
When we meet Sam, the 40-something protagonist of the HBO dramedy "Somebody Somewhere ," she has returned to her hometown, Manhattan, Kan., to care for her dying sister — and finds herself stuck there, single, unhappy, struggling with aging parents and a dead-end job. While her other sister runs a tchotchkes shop and her friend Joel creates vision boards, Sam seems to be moving away from, rather than toward, the objects of middle-class aspiration: marriage, children, job security. At one point, she tells Joel she's going to spend a Saturday writing up her goals and accomplishments, before chucklingly admitting her real plans: "I like to lay around drinking wine in my underwear." And why not? It's a relief to see the women of small-screen comedy and dramedy turning their backs on ambition, personal growth and self-actualization. From "Enlightened" to "Broad City," from "Girls" to "I May Destroy You," female protagonist...

Does Cutting the Cord Make Sense Financially? - ecoustics

Image
We were all told that "cutting the cable cord" would be a wise, long-term move for consumers. It would save us a lot of money and give us access to more content.  TV Streaming  There is no doubt that TV streaming has given us access to a lot more content. In fact, there is so much content to watch who really has the time to watch it all?  As a result, some really good streaming series are often put on the chopping block, or move from one service to another after only one or two seasons, because the services are trying to pull from the same audience pool. However, that isn't all. Within the last couple of years, the number of streaming services has been multiplying like rabbits. Where Netflix and Amazon Prime were once the major sources of library and original streaming content, now just about every studio has jumped in with their own streaming service.  Here are some examples that are availa...

The USB-C Connectors You Never Knew You Wanted To Avoid - Hackaday

Image
On Tech Twitter, some people are known for Their Thing – for example, [A13 (@sad_electronics)], (when they're not busy designing electronics), searches the net to find outstanding parts to marvel at. A good portion of the parts that they find are outstanding for all the wrong reasons. Today, that's a through-hole two-pin USB Type-C socket. Observing the cheap tech we get from China (or the UK!), you might conclude that two 5.1K pulldown resistors are very hard to add to a product – this socket makes it literally impossible. We've seen two-pin THT MicroUSB sockets before, sometimes used for hobbyist kits. This one, however, goes against the main requirement of Type-C connectors – sink (Type-C-powered) devices having pulldowns on CC pins, and source devices (PSUs and host ports) having pull up resistors to VBUS. As disassembly shows, this connector has neither of these nor the capability for you to add anything, as the CC pins are physically not present. If you use this por...

Best British Crime & Detective Dramas From Line of Duty to Vigil - Variety

Image
There's something about watching Detective Inspectors and Chief Constables go about their jobs that's simultaneously engrossing and comforting. The bowler hats, the checked cravats, the baffling lingo — somehow there's nothing like a British crime series for sheer bingeing delight. With generally top-flight production values, clever writing and crackling casts, these series are as well-made as they are fun to watch. And they're a great place for spotting talent that's about to get a bigger profile. American audiences were first introduced to the perfection of Olivia Colman in "Broadchurch" and "The Night Manager," and Richard Madden impressed in "Bodyguard" and "Game of Thrones" before moving into the Marvel world as Ikaris in "Eternals." Could Bond be far away for him? These series range from a tight six or eight episodes ("The Stranger") to several satisfyingly bingeable seasons ("Line of Duty...

BBC series Chloe: Bristol showcased in psychological drama - BBC News

Image
BBC/Mam Tor Productions/York Tillyer The latest drama series to be filmed in Bristol begins on BBC One on Sunday. Multiple locations in the city and surrounding countryside were used for the backdrop of psychological thriller Chloe. Erin Doherty, who played Princess Anne in Netflix series The Crown, stars as lead character Becky Green. The show's producer, Joanna Crow, said Bristol was a city that "carries drama in its blood". "Chloe has an idiosyncratic yet distinctively Bristol/South-West look and sound, but its thrilling story of obsession and grief is universally relatable," she added. AFP Chloe follows 2021's successes The Outlaws and Showtrial, both of which were filmed in and around the city and also set there. It tells the story of how Becky, who still lives with her mother, compares herself to other seemingly more perfect lives on social media - fixating in particular on that of Chloe, a former friend and played by Poppy Gilbert. Inspired by Bristol...

It's a period of U.S. history that's rarely been explored on TV. But there are still some similar shows to check out if you can't get enough of the lavish period drama.   'Belgravia'  Harriet Walter, Ella Purnell, and Tamsin Greig in 'Belgravia' | Carnival Films RELATED: 'Belgravia' Review: Period Drama From the Creator of 'Downton Abbey' Offers Pleasant Escapism The Gilded Age comes from the mind of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
